On January 10, 2024, the world bid farewell to a visionary British businessman and football investor, Peter Robert Johnson. Park Foods and Business Acumen:
The son of a butcher, Johnson transformed the family business, Park Foods, into a thriving enterprise. Branching into a Christmas Savings club in 1967, Johnson’s Park Hamper Company, established in 1969, became a cornerstone of his success. By the early 1990s, Park Foods had made Johnson one of the UK’s wealthiest individuals, with an estimated fortune reaching £150 million. The company’s peak saw the packing and delivery of one million Christmas hampers annually, embodying the spirit of festive joy and community engagement.

However, the business landscape proved challenging, with Johnson navigating the complexities of fluctuating fortunes. The mid-1990s saw diversification into football and flavored crisps, but subsequent challenges led to Park Foods facing losses. Despite these hurdles, Johnson’s resilience and adaptability were a testament to his entrepreneurial spirit.
Football Investments: Tranmere Rovers and Everton:
Johnson’s passion for football manifested in his involvement with Tranmere Rovers. He took control of the Fourth Division club in 1987 and led them to the Second Division by 1990. In 1992, Tranmere Rovers secured promotion to the second-tier league, marking a significant achievement under Johnson’s stewardship.
His football journey extended to Everton F.C., where Johnson injected £10 million in 1994, helping the club avoid relegation. The Football Association’s ruling on single ownership led Johnson to sell his Everton shares in 1999 to Chairman Bill Kenwright for £20 million, marking the end of his tenure at the club.
Tranmere’s Highs and Lows:
Returning to Tranmere, Johnson served as President, witnessing the team’s memorable League Cup final appearance against Leicester City F.C. in 2000. Despite subsequent relegation, Johnson’s commitment to the club remained unwavering. However, financial challenges prompted Johnson to list Tranmere Rovers on eBay in 2009, a move met with public outcry and swift removal.
