Joaquin Phoenix identifies as an atheist. He was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico and grew up in Los Angeles, California. Phoenix’s parents were briefly a part of the “Family International” or Children of God, a cult whose best way of gaining converts was to tout promiscuous sex as a way to get closer to God.

But they left that church and wound up in Los Angeles where Joaquin and his late brother, River, were discovered and became the talented actors that we know today. In 2018, Joaquin Phoenix portrayed Jesus in the biblical drama Mary Magdalene.

Joaquin Phoenix starred in the psychological drama The Master (2012), winning the Volpi Cup for Best Actor and earning his third Academy Award nomination.

Joaquin Phoenix won the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actor for the psychological thriller You Were Never Really Here (2017). He also starred in the independent films C’mon C’mon (2021) and Beau Is Afraid (2023).

For his performance as the titular DC Comics character of Joker (2019) in Todd Phillips’s psychological thriller Joker, Joaquin Phoenix won the Academy Award for Best Actor.
