Beyond the racetrack, Ekström’s journey is rooted in a family with a deep connection to the thrill of racing. Born to Bengt Ekström and Agneta Ekström, Mattias inherited a passion for speed that would define his illustrious career.

Ekström’s introduction to the world of motorsports began in 1993 when he made his debut in karting. The ensuing years saw him navigate various racing circuits, including a notable stint at the Renault 5 Turbo Cup, where he showcased his emerging talents.

His undeniable prowess on the track became evident, culminating in the championship win at the Renault 5 Turbo Cup in 1996. The Swedish racing sensation’s journey took a significant turn when he entered the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM) for Audi in 2001.

This marked the beginning of an extraordinary chapter, where Ekström’s skills behind the wheel elevated him to the upper echelons of DTM. Over the course of his DTM career, which spanned from 2001 to his retirement in 2018, Ekström secured two championships, leaving an indelible mark on the series.

In 2014, Ekström embraced a new challenge, venturing into the FIA World Rallycross Championship, once again representing Audi. His adaptability and excellence on diverse racing terrains were evident as he clinched the title of FIA World Rallycross Champion, adding another illustrious accomplishment to his name.

A notable deviation from his usual racing endeavors occurred in 2013 when Ekström participated in the Bathurst 1000. Paired with co-driver Andy Priaulx in a ‘wildcard’ entry, Ekström defied expectations by qualifying 19th and finishing an impressive 10th. Motorsport enthusiasts and pundits lauded his performance, drawing parallels to racing legends like Jacky Ickx.
