On Friday, January 5, Garraway shared the heartbreaking news of her husband’s passing in an Instagram statement. “I’m sad to have to tell you all that my darling husband Derek has passed away,” she expressed. She detailed that Derek had faced critical illness following a cardiac arrest in early December, which, compounded by the impact of Covid in March 2020, resulted in further complications.

During his final days, Derek was surrounded by his family, and Garraway remained by his side, holding his hand through the last challenging hours until he passed. She expressed gratitude to those who had generously supported their family, sending love and thanks. Her message concluded with a poignant farewell: “Rest gently and peacefully now Derek, my love. I was so lucky to have you in my life.”

In response to Garraway’s post, Sir Elton John offered his condolences, writing, “So sorry to hear of this news, Kate. Love and thoughts to you and your family.”

Garraway and Draper, married since 2005, attended Sir Elton John’s Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour at the 02 Arena in London last April.
