Langella debuted on Broadway in 1966 in Federico García Lorca’s “Yerma.” His breakthrough came with William Gibson’s “A Cry of Players” in 1968, where he portrayed a young and fictionalized William Shakespeare opposite Anne Bancroft. Bancroft recommended Langella to her husband, Mel Brooks, leading to a leading role in “The Twelve Chairs” (1970). The same year, he received a Golden Globe nomination for “Diary of a Mad Housewife.”

Langella’s Broadway success began with his first Tony Award for Edward Albee’s “Seascape” in 1975. However, his portrayal of Dracula in 1977 cemented his status. Langella’s initial reservations about reprising the role for the film adaptation vanished, leading to a successful collaboration with Laurence Olivier. His subsequent Tony Awards came for “Fortune’s Fool” (2002) and two Best Leading Actor wins for “Frost/Nixon” (2007) and “The Father” (2016).
Langella’s reprisal of the Nixon role in “Frost/Nixon” earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. His expansive career brought him accolades such as the Boston Society of Film Critics Award and the Screen Actors Guild Award for “Starting Out in the Evening.” In 2016, he won his fourth Tony Award for “The Father.”
