DJ Kool Herc Parents: Meet Keith and Nettie Campbell

DJ Kool Herc, the legendary Jamaican American DJ credited as one of the founders of hip-hop, traces his roots back to Kingston, Jamaica.

Born Clive Campbell, he is the first of six children born to Keith and Nettie Campbell, and his journey from the vibrant streets of Kingston to the iconic borough of The Bronx played a crucial role in shaping the trajectory of hip-hop.

Clive Campbell’s childhood in Kingston provided him with a rich musical foundation. Growing up in a family of six, with parents Keith and Nettie Campbell, young Clive was immersed in the sounds and rhythms of neighborhood parties known as dance halls.

These events were not only a celebration of music but also an introduction to the vibrant tradition of toasting, where DJs added their own rhythmic speech to the music, setting the stage for the future of hip-hop.

In November 1967, at the age of 12, Clive Campbell, along with his family, embarked on a journey that would ultimately contribute to the birth of hip-hop. They immigrated to The Bronx, New York City, a move that would prove pivotal for the burgeoning DJ.

The Campbell family settled at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue, a location that would go down in history as the birthplace of hip-hop culture. The move to The Bronx marked the beginning of a new chapter for Clive Campbell, now known worldwide as DJ Kool Herc.
