Raye has a background in Ghana. Born Rachel Keen, she grew up in Croydon, south London, with her English dad, Ghanaian-Swiss mum, and her Ghanaian grandma.

Obsessed with songwriting and singing from a young age, she met her current manager via a mutual friend when she was just 13.

Raye’s early years were marked by a vibrant immersion in music, with the church serving as a significant backdrop for her musical journey. Growing up, she sang gospel songs in a church where her father held the esteemed position of musical director, and her mother contributed her voice to the choir. This early exposure to gospel music in the sacred setting of the church laid the foundation for Raye’s deep connection with music.

As life unfolded, Raye’s family relocated to Croydon, providing a new chapter in her formative years. Here, she attended Woodcote High School, where her academic and creative pursuits began to take shape. Subsequently, she enrolled at the BRIT School, a renowned institution known for nurturing artistic talents. However, Raye’s journey at the BRIT School was cut short, as she decided to drop out after two years. The decision stemmed from a desire to break free from the perceived constraints, despite the valuable knowledge she gained during her time there.
