Olsson’s first appearance on a record album was with the band Plastic Penny, featuring on “Two Sides of a Penny” in 1968. His prowess on the drums was showcased in the song “I Want You,” where he not only played drums but also took on lead vocals and a drum solo. Subsequently, he played with the flower-power pop group Argosy in 1969, alongside a budding musician named Reginald Dwight, later known as Elton John.

The early ’70s marked Olsson’s association with Elton John, playing drums on albums like “Empty Sky” and later becoming a vital member of the Elton John Band. Alongside bassist Dee Murray, the trio, completed by guitarist Davey Johnstone, crafted an iconic sound that resonated through critically acclaimed albums like “Honky Chateau,” “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,” and “Caribou.”

In 1971, Olsson released his debut solo album, “Nigel Olsson’s Drum Orchestra and Chorus,” featuring collaborations with fellow musicians. His solo journey continued with albums like “Nigel Olsson” in 1975 and “Changing Tides” in 1980. Olsson’s solo career showcased his versatility, with hits like “A Little Bit of Soap” and “Dancin’ Shoes.”
