Juliet Prowse, born in Bombay, British India, to an English father and South African mother, embarked on a remarkable journey that led her to the glitz and glamour of Hollywood. After losing her father at the age of three, Prowse and her mother returned to South Africa, where she began her dance training at the young age of four.

In her early twenties, while dancing at a club in Paris, Prowse’s life took a turn when she was discovered by a talent agent. This led to her signing on for the role of Claudine in the Walter Lang film “Can-Can” (1960). Despite missing earlier opportunities to venture to Hollywood due to contractual obligations, Prowse left a show in Spain to make her mark in southern California alongside stars like Frank Sinatra, Maurice Chevalier, Louis Jourdan, and Shirley MacLaine.

Capturing the Spotlight

It was during the filming of “Can-Can” in 1959 that Prowse captured international attention. The then Soviet Union’s Communist Party chairman, Nikita Khrushchev, visited the set in Los Angeles. Prowse’s performance of the saucy 19th-century French dance, the “can-can,” for Khrushchev garnered both acclaim and controversy. The subsequent publicity thrust Prowse into the limelight in the United States, setting the stage for her burgeoning career.

Hollywood Stardom and Romantic Fling with Elvis Presley

Her Hollywood journey accelerated with her next film, where she starred alongside teen rock and roll star Elvis Presley in “G.I. Blues” (1960). During the filming, Prowse and Presley had a short and intense romantic fling that mirrored the movie’s plot. Prowse’s charisma and talent earned her recognition as a standout performer.

Television and Film Career

Prowse’s talent extended beyond the silver screen. She met Frank Sinatra on the set of “Can-Can,” and her performance was hailed as the highlight of the film by Time magazine. Her major musical and dancing role came alongside Elvis Presley in “G.I. Blues,” solidifying her status as a sought-after entertainer.

In addition to her film career, Prowse starred in her own NBC sitcom, “Mona McCluskey,” during the 1965–1966 season. The show, produced by George Burns, explored the dynamics of a couple living on a military salary.

While her film and television career didn’t reach the predicted heights, Prowse took a philosophical approach, stating, “Things generally happen for the best… I never worry about what happens in my career because I can always do something else.”

Beyond Hollywood: Las Vegas and More

Juliet Prowse transitioned to headline successful Las Vegas shows, commanding high salaries. She won Entertainer of the Year for the Vegas run of “Sweet Charity” and became a familiar face in nationwide TV commercials for brands like L’eggs hosiery and Mannington Flooring.

Prowse showcased her famous dancer’s legs and hosted the Championship Ballroom Dance Competition on PBS throughout the mid-1980s and 1990s.

Her career faced challenges, including a serious leopard attack in 1987 during the filming of “Circus of the Stars” and a promotional stunt on “The Tonight Show,” requiring numerous stitches to reattach her ear.
