A conservatorship is a legal arrangement that gives someone else the authority to make decisions for a person who is deemed unable to do so for themselves, usually due to mental illness or disability. In Britney’s case, her father Jamie Spears was appointed as her conservator in 2008, after she suffered a public breakdown and was hospitalized for psychiatric evaluation.

Britney was later joined by a lawyer, Andrew Wallet, and a professional care manager, Jodi Montgomery, who oversaw different aspects of Britney’s personal and financial affairs .

Britney was under conservatorship for more than 13 years, during which she released four albums, performed in a successful Las Vegas residency, and appeared on various TV shows. However, she also faced restrictions on her personal choices, such as getting married, having children, or even removing her birth control device.

Britney also claimed that she was forced to work against her will, take medication that she did not want, and go to rehab. In June 2021, Britney spoke publicly for the first time about her conservatorship in a court hearing, where she described it as \”abusive\” and \”traumatizing\”.
Britney Spears pleaded with the judge to end the arrangement and let her live her life freely. Her testimony sparked widespread outrage and sympathy from fans, celebrities, and human rights groups, who rallied behind the #FreeBritney movement.
In September 2021, Jamie Spears agreed to step down as Britney’s conservator after facing pressure from her new lawyer, Mathew Rosengart, who filed a petition to remove him. A month later, a judge suspended Jamie Spears from the conservatorship and appointed a temporary replacement, John Zabel, an accountant chosen by Britney and her lawyer.
On November 12, 2021, Britney’s conservatorship was finally terminated by Judge Brenda Penny, who said that \”the current situation is untenable\” and that \”it reflects a toxic environment\”. The judge also praised Britney for her courage and resilience in speaking out about her ordeal. Britney celebrated the news on social media, calling it \”the best day ever\” and thanking her fans for their support.
