Tamil cinema has witnessed its fair share of on-screen dramas, but sometimes, the real-life conflicts between actors can overshadow the reel stories. Such was the case with the highly publicized feud between Vijayakanth, the iconic actor-turned-politician, and Vadivelu, the comedic sensation of Tamil cinema.

The rift between the two stars reached its zenith on September 21, 2008, when Vadivelu’s residence in Saligramam, Chennai, became the target of a stone-pelting incident by an unknown gang. The attack left several windows shattered and furniture damaged. Vadivelu promptly pointed fingers at Vijayakanth’s camp, alleging that it was a retaliatory move ahead of the final court hearing for a case he had filed against Vijayakanth for assault.

In response, Vadivelu not only filed another case, this time for attempted murder against Vijayakanth but also expressed his intention to challenge him in the upcoming assembly elections. Vadivelu vowed to “teach him a lesson” through the electoral process. Vijayakanth, on the other hand, dismissed these accusations during a press meet, labeling them as mere hearsay.

The feud took a political turn during the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections in 2011. Vadivelu, known for his comedic timing on screen, turned serious as he vehemently campaigned for the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and its allies. During his public speeches, he spared no words in criticizing Vijayakanth and his party, the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK), which had allied with the opposition party All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK).

In one campaign speech in Tiruvarur, Vadivelu declared that his sole objective was to oust Vijayakanth’s entire team and actively promote the victory of the DMK. The comedian-turned-political activist faced criticism for his apparent bias, as he seemed to be solely focused on securing a DMK-led victory, without acknowledging the AIADMK or its leader, J. Jayalalitha.

However, the political tides did not turn in Vadivelu’s favor. The AIADMK alliance emerged victorious in the elections, while Vijayakanth secured a significant win in his own constituency.

The clash didn’t end there. In subsequent years, Vadivelu continued his outspoken criticism, taking aim not only at Vijayakanth but also at other prominent figures like Rajinikanth. This move, particularly against Rajinikanth, sparked backlash from supporters.

Vadivelu’s actions also attracted criticism for making obscene gestures in public, often directed at journalists. The ongoing feud between Vijayakanth and Vadivelu became a chapter in the colorful tapestry of Tamil cinema and politics, showcasing the intersections of fame, rivalry, and the sometimes tumultuous transition from the silver screen to the political stage.
