1. Gaston Leroux: Christie was inspired by Leroux’s 1908 closed-door whodunit “The Mystery of the Yellow Room,” which is widely considered one of the best in the genre.

2. Her step-grandmother: Christie’s step-grandmother Margaret West Miller, whom she called “Auntie-Grannie,” was the model for Miss Jane Marple, one of her most well-liked characters.

3. Money: Christie’s fear of poverty, which derived from her memory of the sudden downward swoop of the Miller fortunes, was central to her writings.

4. Her sister: Christie’s sister Madge encouraged her to write a detective novel after they discussed various detective novels they liked.

5. Her imaginary friends: Christie invented imaginary friends to keep her company as a child, and these characters helped her shape the ones in her novelse-stories-behind-queen-crimes-inspirations.

Agatha Christie also wrote the world’s longest-running play, the murder mystery The Mousetrap, which has been performed in the West End since 1952.
