Born into a bourgeois family in Valenciennes, his parents, Madeleine Paolassini and Maurice Defays, laid the foundation for a legacy in the world of cinema.

The grandson of Léopold Defays, the esteemed director of the company Escaut-et-Meuse, Pierre Richard’s familial lineage carried a touch of artistic inclination. His unique name, Pierre Richard, was derived from the stage name of Pierre Richard-Willm, a prominent actor who happened to be his mother’s favorite.

The echoes of theater and cinema were woven into the fabric of his early life. Raised in his native city of Valenciennes, Richard’s formative years unfolded within the embrace of a bourgeois upbringing. He attended the Henri-Wallon high school, where he navigated the corridors of academia, his mind often wandering to the allure of the silver screen.

Regularly skipping classes to immerse himself in the magic of cinema, it was the performance of Danny Kaye in “Up in Arms” that ignited the spark of his vocation. Although met with only moderate enthusiasm from his family, Richard’s determination led him to Paris, where he enrolled in the renowned Ecole Charles Dullin to study dramatic arts.

The initial stages of his journey were marked by less-than-brilliant debuts, as he grappled with the desire to pursue straight drama—a genre that did not align with his natural inclinations.

Faced with the uncertainties of a career in the arts, Richard took a pragmatic approach and studied kinesiotherapy as a safety net. However, his passion for acting refused to be relegated to the sidelines. Despite the challenges, Pierre Richard persevered, paving the way for a career that would redefine comedy in French cinema.
