Alongside his French driver and mechanic, he went missing for six days in the Sahara desert. The subsequent large-scale search, which included military aircraft and ground troops, ended with the group being found off course. The incident caused international embarrassment and drew attention to his mother’s personal life.

Business Ventures and Controversies:

During the mid to late 1980s, concerns arose regarding potential conflicts of interest between Sir Mark’s business endeavours and his mother’s political visits. Allegations of benefiting from his mother’s position were fueled by his involvement in projects related to the Al-Yamamah arms deal. His business ventures took him from Texas, where he worked for Lotus Cars and British Car Auctions, to Switzerland as a tax exile, and eventually to South Africa, where he faced allegations of running loan shark operations. Charged with contravening South Africa’s Foreign Military Assistance Act, he was accused of providing funding and logistical assistance for the attempted coup. The subsequent legal proceedings involved a guilty plea, a hefty fine, and a four-year suspended prison sentence.
