Rafiushan Kureishi, Hanif’s father, hailed from a wealthy family with roots in Madras (now Chennai), India. The family decided to move to Pakistan following the Partition of India in 1947. Rafiushan initially came to the UK in 1950 to pursue a law degree. However, financial constraints led him to take a desk job at the Pakistani embassy instead. It was there that he met his future wife, Audrey Buss, described as a “young lower-middle-class suburban woman.”

Audrey Buss, Hanif’s English mother, played a significant role in shaping his early life. The couple settled in Bromley, where Hanif Kureishi was born and spent his formative years.

In an interview, Kureishi provided insights into his family background, noting his grandfather’s role as an army doctor and colonel in the British Indian Army. He described a family life filled with luxury, servants, tennis courts, and cricket matches. After his parents’ marriage, they established their home in Bromley, and it was there that Kureishi’s unique upbringing began.
