Geoffrey Rush sued the Sydney Daily Telegraph for defamation after the newspaper published allegations of “inappropriate behavior” against him in 2017.

Rush won the defamation case in 2019, and the newspaper was ordered to pay him $2.9 million in damages. The newspaper appealed the decision, but the appeal was rejected in 2020.

Geoffrey Rush gained mainstream popularity for his role as Captain Hector Barbossa in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise (2003–2017).
