As Cheers entered its third season, Colasanto’s health began to decline significantly. Despite noticeable weight loss, he kept the severity of his illness a closely guarded secret from his fellow cast members.

During the production of the season, co-star Ted Danson revealed that Colasanto faced challenges in remembering his lines.
Admitted to a local hospital for water in his lungs after the Christmas holiday in 1984, Colasanto’s doctor advised against returning to work.
Although he made a brief appearance in the cold opening of the third-season finale episode “Rescue Me,” his last full episode was “Cheerio Cheers,” filmed in late November 1984.
Tragically, Nicholas Colasanto passed away from a heart attack at the age of 61 on February 12, 1985, leaving behind a legacy of laughter and warmth in the hearts of Cheers fans worldwide.
