Nicholas Colasanto, celebrated American actor and television director, earned his place in television history with his iconic portrayal of “Coach” Ernie Pantusso in the beloved sitcom Cheers.

A World War II veteran, Colasanto’s journey into acting took an unexpected turn as he was preparing for retirement, ultimately landing him the role of Coach, which would become his most renowned performance.

By Cheers’ third season, Colasanto’s health took a severe toll, evident in his weight loss that he kept concealed from his colleagues.

Despite grappling with a undisclosed illness, he continued his work. Concerns heightened when, after the Christmas holiday in 1984, he was hospitalized for water in his lungs. Co-star Ted Danson revealed Colasanto’s struggle with remembering lines during production.

Although he briefly appeared in the third-season finale, “Rescue Me” (1985), Colasanto’s last full episode was “Cheerio Cheers” (1985), filmed in late November 1984.

Tragically, he succumbed to a heart attack at home on February 12, 1985, marking the end of a remarkable career that left a great impact on television audiences.
