Matt Poitras Parents: Meet Tricia and Phil Poitras

Matthew Poitras, the rising star in Canadian professional ice hockey, is making waves as the dynamic centre for the Boston Bruins in the National Hockey League (NHL).

Beyond the icy rinks and fast-paced games, Matthew’s journey is woven into a rich family tapestry, with Tricia and Phil Poitras standing as pillars of support and inspiration.

Tricia Poitras, Matthew’s mother, boasts a compelling hockey history of her own. She grew up in the revered Peterborough Ice Kats program, and her passion for the sport was evident early on. At the age of 25, Tricia played a pivotal role in leading the senior Ice Kats to provincial and Eastern Canadian championships, leaving an indelible mark on the ice.

Phil Poitras, Matthew’s father, hails from Williamstown near Cornwall, carving his own path in the hockey world. Phil’s journey in rep hockey took him all the way up to Jr. B with the Char-Lan Rebels, showcasing his commitment to the game.

The love story between Phil and Tricia unfolded on the soccer field, where both were varsity players at Fleming College in 1996. The duo’s connection transcended sports, and they tied the knot in ’99.

In terms of profession, Phil has found his niche working alongside Ed at Investors Group Private Wealth Management, while Tricia contributes her skills to Johnson & Johnson in Markham. The Poitras family’s dedication to excellence extends beyond the realm of sports into their respective careers.

Matthew’s journey in hockey has been a dream in the making. His aspirations of playing in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) were nurtured from a young age as he attended games of both the Oshawa Generals and the Petes, proudly owning jerseys from both teams. When asked about his allegiance, Matthew humorously remarked, “Whoever drafts me.”

Phil reflects on the intriguing process of watching Matthew’s growth in hockey, expressing pride in his son’s unexpected success. “We’re pretty proud of him,” Phil said. “He’s probably had a better year than expected. We knew he had the talent, but the second half of the year he really turned it on, and people started to notice.”
