Dawood Ibrahim’s alleged involvement in the March 1993 bombings in Bombay, now Mumbai, is believed to be a response to the communal tensions ignited by the demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya in December 1992.

The demolition had triggered widespread communal riots across India, particularly in Mumbai, leading to heightened religious and social tensions.
The bombings were a devastating act of terror that targeted several locations in Mumbai and resulted in significant loss of life and property. Dawood Ibrahim is widely considered to be the mastermind behind these coordinated attacks.
In 2003, both the Indian and United States governments designated him a “Global Terrorist,” underscoring the severity of his alleged involvement.

It is suggested that Ibrahim orchestrated the bombings as a reprisal for the Babri Masjid’s demolition, aiming to further inflame religious tensions and disrupt communal harmony. The aftermath of these events led to Ibrahim’s inclusion in India’s “Most Wanted List,” reflecting the gravity of the charges against him.
In a revealing public discourse in June 2017, Ram Jethmalani, a prominent lawyer, disclosed that Dawood Ibrahim had expressed willingness to return to India and stand trial. However, this offer was contingent on assurances that he would not face mistreatment.
Jethmalani conveyed this proposal to the authorities, but it was reportedly declined, with suggestions that the refusal stemmed from concerns that Dawood might expose sensitive information about those in power.
