Raised mostly by his mother, Jessica, Cody navigated the challenges of a childhood marked by adversity. Growing up in Uhrichsville, Cody shares a close bond with his brother Zach, who is ten months his senior. Their relationship was characterized by constant sibling rivalry, with the brothers engaging in spirited bouts throughout their formative years.

In interviews, Cody has candidly spoken about the absence of his drug-addicted father, John Meese, in his life. He revealed that his father spent a significant portion of his life behind bars, leaving a void in Cody’s upbringing. The separation of Cody’s parents occurred when he was just one year old, a consequence of a domestic abuse incident.

The complexities of Cody’s early life took another turn when, at the age of 10, he was adopted by Jessica’s then-husband. This familial shift marked a pivotal moment for Cody, as he found stability and support in the household. Raised alongside his brother, Cody began his foray into combat sports at a remarkably young age.

At the ages of four and five, Cody and Zach were introduced to the world of boxing under the guidance of their uncle Robert Meese, an Olympic alternate in the sport. However, Jessica, their mother, concerned about the potential risks, redirected the brothers towards wrestling, steering them away from the pugilistic path.

While Cody briefly explored wrestling, it wasn’t long before he chose to pursue a career in mixed martial arts (MMA). This decision marked a significant shift in his trajectory, leading him to his first MMA bout in 2009. Before turning professional, Cody compiled a commendable record of 6-2, showcasing his natural talent and dedication to the sport.
