Throughout his extensive career in local media, Hanson’s warm curiosity, dry wit, and affable charm endeared him to audiences in various roles, including weatherman, talk show host, interviewer, reporter, and even cartoonist. His unique approach to weather reports, such as doodling a shivering dog on the coldest spot of the map, became iconic, showcasing his creativity and connection with viewers.

In a statement shared with ABC7, Hanson’s family expressed their grief, describing him as a “gracious, beautiful, and charming human being.” They emphasized his roles not only as a television professional with a career spanning over five decades but also as a loving husband, father, and grandfather. Hanson’s presence will be dearly missed by those who knew him both on and off the screen.
A third-generation San Franciscan, Hanson’s roots in the city ran deep. Growing up in Haight-Ashbury and attending San Francisco State University, he embarked on his television journey as a stage manager at KRON in 1957. His on-screen career took off in the early 1960s when he filled in for other personalities, eventually leading to a role as a quiz show host on KTVU.
Hanson’s success continued with a talk show on KPIX called “Jack’s Place.” Later, he served as KGO’s weather forecaster and co-hosted the station’s morning talk show, “A.M. San Francisco.” His influence even extended to a neighborhood burger spot in the Richmond, where Bill’s Place named a cheddar cheeseburger after him, albeit with a slight spelling error on the menu.
Throughout his illustrious career, Hanson interviewed a myriad of local and international figures, including Suzanne Somers, Mr. Rogers, Sophia Loren, Ted Kennedy, Willie Mays, Dick Van Dyke, and former President Gerald Ford. His ability to connect with people from all walks of life defined his legacy as a beloved and versatile television personality in the Bay Area.
