The American former professional basketball player George Gervin, also known by his moniker “the Iceman,” was a member of the Virginia Squires, San Antonio Spurs, and Chicago Bulls. He competed in both the American and National Basketball Associations.

A vice president of basketball operations for the Virginia Squires of the ABA named Johnny Kerr first noticed Gervin when he was playing in Michigan for the Pontiac Chaparrals of the Continental Basketball Association in 1972–1973. After signing Gervin to a $40,000-a-year contract in January 1973, Kerr moved on to the Squires.
George Gervin, who is no longer in the NBA, has created groups that help impoverished kids and has been involved in the San Antonio community ever since. George Gervin Youth Center, which he founded, in 1991.
