American professional basketball player George F. McGinnis participated in 11 seasons in both the National Basketball Association and the American Basketball Association.

McGinnis was the first sophomore to lead the Big Ten in both scoring and rebounds during his 1970–71 season at Indiana.
The news that McGinnis would be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2017 alongside Tracy McGrady, Bill Self, and Rebecca Lobo was released on April 1, 2017. September 8 was his induction date.

During his final years, McGinnis’s health deteriorated mostly as a result of back issues that necessitated several surgeries. At the age of 73, he passed away from cardiac issues at a hospital in Indianapolis on December 14, 2023.

In the 1970–71 season at Indiana, McGinnis became the first sophomore to lead the Big Ten in scoring and rebounding.
He averaged 29.9 points per game in his lone season in Bloomington earning All-American and All-Big Ten Honors in 1971. He played for coach Lou Watson, the year before IU hired Bob Knight.
