Hailing from Newfoundland, Mercer’s journey to professional hockey stardom began with his early involvement in the Tri Pen Ice U15 AAA team in the Newfoundland Bantam AAA league. A standout player from a young age, Mercer recorded an impressive 68 points in 24 games during his time with the Tri Pen Ice, setting the stage for his future in the sport.
Choosing to play prep hockey with the Bishop’s College School under-18 varsity team at the age of 15, Mercer’s commitment to honing his skills paved the way for a successful transition to higher levels of competition. As a rookie in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), he recorded 26 points in 68 games, showcasing his adaptability and skill on the ice.

Just four days later, he notched his inaugural NHL goal against the Seattle Kraken, setting the stage for a standout rookie season with 42 points in 82 games. In addition to his regular-season success, Mercer demonstrated his mettle in the playoffs, scoring his first NHL playoff goal against the New York Rangers on April 27, 2023, contributing to a 4–0 shutout in Game 5 of the 2023 playoffs.
