In more than 18 years as a professional, he played as a midfielder for Charlton Athletic, Leeds United, West Ham United, Newcastle United, Birmingham City, and Ipswich Town.

Before joining Charlton Athletic as a schoolboy, Bowyer, who was born in Canning Town, London, played for the youth team Senrab.

After a two-and-a-half-year contract was signed, Bowyer took over as Birmingham City’s head coach on March 16, 2021, replacing Aitor Karanka.

After taking over as head coach in September 2023, Bowyer’s Montserrat national football team defeated Barbados 3-2 in his first game.
