Initially playing for Central Districts in the 1981–1982 season as a right-arm fast–medium bowler, Stirling made his debut for New Zealand in a One Day International against Sri Lanka on March 31, 1984. Against Pakistan on November 16, 1984, he made his Test debut.
A brief illness claimed Stirling’s life at the age of 62. He had three children, Daniel, Michael, and Annie, with his American wife Debbie.
