In a few three hours, the jury delivered guilty verdicts. A mandatory life sentence for first-degree murder was in store for him.
Leon Circuit Judge Stephen Everett heard victim impact statements from Markel’s family before imposing his sentence.
Less than a day had passed since his mother, Donna Adelson, entered a not-guilty plea during her arraignment before Everett, before his sentencing.

Was Charlie Adelson family in court?
Monday, Charlie Adelson’s mother, Donna, was arraigned in a Leon County courtroom. Donna is accused of working with her son Charlie to hire hitmen to kill Markel.
Donna pleaded not guilty to the charges against her. Her next status hearing is scheduled for January 9, 2024.
Why didn’t Charlie Adelson parents testify?
During a hearing Friday, Assistant State Attorney Georgia Cappleman issued a stipulated motion in open court showing that Charlie Adelson waived his rights to call his parents as witnesses in the case.
The state, meanwhile, agreed to withdraw all subpoenas compelling them to testify in the case.
