Holly made an indelible mark in the entertainment industry, notably becoming the first Black star of a daytime television series with her groundbreaking role as Carla Gray in ABC’s iconic soap opera “One Life to Live.”

Cast in 1968, Holly’s portrayal of Carla Gray was more than a character; it was a pivotal moment in television history. Producer Agnes Nixon recognized Holly’s talent after reading her thought-provoking New York Times opinion piece, titled “How Black Do You Have To Be,” where the actress candidly shared her struggles in securing acting roles as a light-skinned Black woman.

Holly dedicated over a decade of her life to “One Life to Live,” staying with the series from 1968 to 1980 and returning for another stint from 1983 to 1985. In her 1996 autobiography, “One Life: The Autobiography of an African American Actress,” Holly fearlessly exposed the industry’s disparities, shedding light on the underpayment and mistreatment faced by her and her Black co-stars while working on the show.
