Unlike many South Korean athletes who are obligated to serve in the military, Kim Ha-seong took a unique path that spared him from this mandatory duty.

In 2018, Kim represented South Korea in the Asian Games held in Jakarta and Palembang. His participation in this international sporting event proved to be pivotal, as he not only showcased his athletic prowess but also contributed to South Korea winning a gold medal.

This achievement elevated Kim to a special status, exempting him from the mandatory military service that many young South Korean men are required to complete. The exemption was granted based on the exceptional circumstance of winning a gold medal at the Asian Games.

However, this special privilege came with a responsibility for Kim Ha-seong. To fulfill his military service exception, he committed to completing more than 500 hours of volunteer work. This unique arrangement allowed him to contribute to society in a different manner while being freed from the traditional military service obligations.
