Tucsonana Joe, Alex Verdugo’s father, played a pivotal role in shaping his baseball journey. A baseball coach with a wealth of knowledge about the sport, Joe not only encouraged Alex to take up baseball as a child but also coached various minor league teams.

He passed down his passion for the game and valuable insights, laying the groundwork for Alex’s successful career. One notable moment showcasing the father-son connection was during the Futures Game, where Alex represented Mexico.

Despite not being fluent in Spanish, Alex chose to honor his father’s heritage and proudly played for Mexico, a gesture that spoke volumes about their bond. In contrast to Joe’s baseball expertise, Shelly Verdugo contributed to Alex’s success in a different way.

His mother Shelly worked as a hairdresser for over 35 years and is the owner and master stylist at Studio 99 Hair Design. Beyond her professional career, Shelly took on administrative tasks and focused on nutrition to support Alex’s dream of playing in Major League Baseball.

The Verdugo family’s unwavering support and encouragement became evident when Alex was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2014 MLB Draft. Shelly and Joe, proud parents, celebrated their son’s achievement, marking a significant milestone in Alex’s baseball journey.
