Despite being named John William Weller at birth, he later became widely known as Paul, a name chosen by his parents. Raised in a working-class family, Weller’s father worked as a taxi driver and a builder, while his mother juggled part-time work as a cleaner.

From an early age, Weller exhibited a passion for music, initially inspired by iconic bands like the Beatles, the Who, and the Small Faces. Weller’s journey into the world of music took a more definitive turn after attending a Status Quo concert in 1972.

It was then that he formed the first incarnation of the Jam with his close friends Steve Brookes and Dave Waller. Under the management of Weller’s father, the band started performing in local working men’s clubs, gradually building a reputation.

The departure of Brookes in 1976 led to a restructuring of the band, with Weller taking on the role of guitarist and Bruce Foxton joining as the rhythm guitarist. Embracing the 1960s mod culture, inspired by the likes of the Who, Weller immersed himself in the aesthetics of the movement, riding a Lambretta scooter and adopting a mod wardrobe on and off the stage.

This commitment to mod culture became a defining aspect of Weller’s identity, influencing not only his personal style but also shaping the visual and musical direction of the Jam. Weller’s unwavering dedication to mod principles was articulated in a 1991 interview, where he declared, “I’ll always be a mod. You can bury me a mod.”

This early exposure to music, coupled with his family’s working-class background, laid the foundation for Paul Weller’s enduring legacy as a prominent figure in British music and mod culture.
