A defining moment in his coaching career occurred during a successful tenure as caretaker manager for Barnsley, leading the club to promotion and clinching the EFL Trophy.
However, the managerial path is fraught with challenges. In February 2018, Heckingbottom took on a new venture with Leeds United but faced dismissal during the 2018 close season after overseeing 16 games.
Undeterred, he embraced a fresh challenge in the Scottish Premiership, taking charge at Hibernian, a tenure that concluded in November 2019.
March 2021 marked Heckingbottom’s return to familiar ground as he assumed the role of interim manager at Sheffield United. After a brief stint with the U23’s, he officially became the manager on November 25, 2021, signing a four-and-a-half-year deal and succeeding Slaviša Jokanović.
Heckingbottom’s managerial prowess came to the forefront during the 2022-23 season, earning him the EFL Championship Manager of the Month award three times.
