The Swiss-born Italian surgeon’s notoriety stems from unethically performing synthetic trachea transplants, even on patients deemed relatively healthy. The consequences were devastating, with seven out of the eight patients succumbing to the experimental procedures.

The gravity of these accusations has led to legal repercussions, with Macchiarini being convicted of research-related crimes in both Italy and Sweden. Among the total of 20 patients subjected to Macchiarini’s synthetic trachea transplants, the grim reality emerges: only three are known to be alive.
