Born to Mario Montembeault and Manon Royer, Samuel Montembeault’s journey into the world of hockey started at the tender age of 5 when he joined the MAHG program in Bécancour. It was here that he fell in love with the goalie position, demonstrating an early affinity for the role.
During his MAHG days, Montembeault’s dedication to playing goalie stood out. Despite being supposed to play an extra year at the MAHG level due to his late birthday (Oct. 30), he willingly stepped into the goalie position whenever an opportunity arose, showcasing his passion for the game.

However, the path to becoming a full-time goalie came with financial challenges. While the hockey association provided equipment during the MAHG days, once Montembeault committed to goaltending full-time, his parents had to make sacrifices to fund the necessary gear.
Despite financial constraints, the family’s commitment to supporting Montembeault’s passion for hockey became a testament to their dedication. Montembeault recalled those early years, stating, “My parents made a lot of sacrifices. Growing up, we didn’t have the most money, so we were always going to Shawinigan at Hockey Lemay, and we were buying used gear there. Every year, I had different pads and gloves … they didn’t match.”
Despite the financial challenges, Montembeault’s love for the game and unwavering support from his family fueled his journey. He emphasizes the importance of having fun in the early years of minor hockey, creating lifelong friendships and memories.
