Born Mary Katherine Schmitz in 1962 in Tustin, California, Mary Kay Letourneau was the product of a family deeply entrenched in politics. Her father, John G. Schmitz, began his political career when Mary Kay was just two years old, successfully running as a Republican for a seat in the California state legislature.

Over the years, he held various positions, including California state senator and U.S. Congressman, showcasing a family firmly rooted in Republican politics.

The Schmitz family’s political journey was marked by both triumphs and tragedies. In 1970, John G. Schmitz won a special election for an unexpired term in the U.S. Congress, followed by a successful general election later that year.

However, in 1973, a devastating event struck the family when Letourneau’s three-year-old brother drowned in the family pool in Corona del Mar, California.

The Schmitz family faced a significant political scandal in 1982 when it was revealed that John G. Schmitz had fathered two children out of wedlock during an extramarital affair with a former student. This revelation permanently damaged his political career, leading to his intention to run for the U.S. Senate in 1982 being thwarted. The scandal also caused Letourneau’s parents to separate, although they later reconciled.

The Schmitz family continued to play a role in national politics, with Letourneau’s brother, John P. Schmitz, serving as the deputy counsel to President George H. W. Bush. Another brother, Joseph E. Schmitz, held prominent positions, including Inspector General of the U.S. Department of Defense under President George W. Bush and serving as a foreign policy adviser to President Donald Trump.
