The seeds of Dean Evason’s coaching career were planted in 1999 when he took on the role of assistant coach with the Calgary Hitmen in the WHL. This marked the beginning of a coaching odyssey that would see him take on various roles and responsibilities within the league, showcasing his passion for developing talent and guiding teams to success.
His coaching trajectory continued to ascend as he assumed the head coaching position for the Kamloops Blazers from 1999 to 2002, followed by a stint with the Vancouver Giants from 2002 to 2004. Evason’s return to the Calgary Hitmen in the 2004–05 season saw him take on the role of co-coach, further expanding his coaching repertoire.

In 2005, the Washington Capitals recognized Evason’s coaching prowess and brought him on board as an assistant coach. His time with the Capitals provided valuable experience at the NHL level, setting the stage for the next chapter in his coaching career.
The Milwaukee Admirals came calling in 2012, appointing Evason as their head coach. Over the next six seasons, he etched his name into the team’s history as the second-winningest coach, showcasing his ability to lead and motivate players in the competitive American Hockey League (AHL).
In 2018, the Minnesota Wild recognized Dean Evason’s coaching acumen, bringing him on as an assistant coach. His contributions to the team did not go unnoticed, and on February 14, 2020, he was named interim head coach of the Wild. Just a few months later, on July 13, 2020, the “interim” tag was dropped, solidifying Evason as the fifth full-time head coach in the franchise’s history.
However, coaching in the NHL comes with its challenges, and after a 5–10–4 start capped by a seven-game losing streak, the Wild made the decision to part ways with Evason on November 27, 2023.
