Knight began her musical journey at the age of 22 in 1965, recording her first demo track—a cover of Jackie Wilson’s “Stop Doggin’ Me Around.” This led to her first record deal with the Jet Star/Tribe label. Despite a slow start to her career, she persevered, balancing her singing pursuits with a day job as a baker.

Her breakthrough came with the release of “Mr. Big Stuff” under the renowned Stax Records in Memphis, Tennessee. The Grammy-nominated song, topping charts for five weeks, is hailed as one of the most recognizable classic funk records, selling over three million copies, according to the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame, as reported by Rolling Stone.

Bernie Cyrus, the former executive director of the Louisiana Music Commission, fondly remembered Knight’s willingness to engage in charitable causes, describing her as “fabulous” in her generosity. Jean Knight’s legacy is not only musical but also marked by her impactful contributions to the community.
