About Esi Edugyan
Esi Edugyan is a Ghanaian-Canadian novelist, who has left a great mark on the literary landscape with her compelling storytelling and literary prowess.
Twice honored with the prestigious Giller Prize, Edugyan’s journey as a novelist has been nothing short of remarkable.
At the age of 24, Edugyan released her debut novel, “The Second Life of Samuel Tyne,” a work that not only showcased her talent but also earned her a spot on the shortlist for the Hurston-Wright Legacy Award in 2005.

However, it was her second novel, “Half-Blood Blues,” that truly catapulted Edugyan into the literary spotlight. The novel got shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize, Scotiabank Giller Prize, Rogers Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize, and the Governor General’s Award for English-language fiction.
In 2011, Edugyan’s literary prowess was further affirmed when she clinched the Giller Prize for “Half-Blood Blues.” This was not a one-time feat, as she secured the same prestigious award once again in 2018 for her third novel, “Washington Black.”
Beyond her novels, Edugyan’s literary contributions extend to anthologies. In Margaret Busby’s 2019 anthology, “New Daughters of Africa,” Edugyan’s voice resonates through her contribution titled “The Wrong Door: Some Meditations on Solitude and Writing.”
Edugyan was selected as the chair for the 2023 Booker Prize jury. She continues to stand as a literary luminary whose impact extends far beyond the pages of her novels.
