China has announced a one-year trial of visa-free travel for citizens from France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, and Malaysia. Starting from December 1, 2023, to November 30, 2024, ordinary passport holders from these countries can conduct business or travel in China for up to 15 days without the need for a visa. This move is part of China’s efforts to promote high-quality development and opening up, as stated by spokeswoman Mao Ning on Friday.

Typically, most travelers to China require a visa for entry, making this trial a significant departure from the standard entry requirements. The exemption is aimed at facilitating easier business and travel between China and the mentioned countries, fostering stronger international ties.

Citizens of Singapore and Brunei are currently exceptions to the general visa requirements when entering China, provided their visit is for business, tourism, family visits, or transit and does not exceed 15 days.

The announcement comes on the heels of China’s decision to resume issuing all types of visas in March 2023. This move marks a notable shift from the strict travel restrictions imposed in March 2020 in response to the global coronavirus pandemic. For three years, China implemented stringent Covid-19 measures, including travel restrictions, lockdowns, and frequent testing requirements. The country’s zero-Covid policy, while effective in controlling the virus, had substantial economic impacts. It was officially lifted in December 2022.

Before the pandemic, China attracted tens of millions of international visitors annually. The trial of visa-free travel for citizens from the six selected countries is expected to contribute to the revival of international tourism and strengthen economic and cultural exchanges.
