During his tenure from 2001 to 2020, Chauvin amassed 18 complaints and was implicated in three police shootings, one resulting in a fatality. Two letters of reprimand underscored his history of misconduct.
The turning point occurred on May 25, 2020, when Chauvin knelt on Floyd’s neck for a harrowing nine minutes. Floyd’s plea, “I can’t breathe,” echoed globally, sparking protests across the United States and beyond.

Dismissed by the Minneapolis Police Department on May 26, Chauvin was swiftly arrested.
In early 2021, the high-profile trial ensued, culminating in Chauvin’s conviction on April 20 for second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter.
A consequential sentencing on June 25 saw him confined to 22 and a half years in FCI Tucson, Arizona, where, tragically, he fell victim to violence on November 24, 2023, when stabbed by a fellow inmate.
The Chauvin case remains a stark reminder of the need for reform within law enforcement.
