Born in Toronto, Tanev’s journey into the world of ice hockey was influenced by his older brother, Christopher Tanev. However, both brothers faced setbacks at the age of 15 when they were cut from their respective minor ice hockey teams due to their perceived small stature.
After navigating the challenges, Tanev pursued his passion for hockey and eventually graduated from Providence. His dedication and skill led to a contract with the Winnipeg Jets. Throughout the 2016–17 NHL season, Tanev showcased his versatility by moving between the NHL and the American Hockey League. In the subsequent seasons, he became a key player on a checking line alongside Adam Lowry and Andrew Copp.

Entering free agency for the 2019–20 season, Tanev made a strategic move by signing a contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins. His skills and contributions on the ice did not go unnoticed, and the Seattle Kraken selected him in the 2021 NHL Expansion Draft, marking a new chapter in his hockey journey.
While Tanev has demonstrated his commitment to the sport, the focus on family planning is a personal matter for him and his partner. As of now, the couple has not expanded their family with the arrival of children. For Tanev, the rink remains his arena of achievement, and the prospect of fatherhood may be a consideration for the future.
