Phil Kaufman, a friend and road manager for Parsons initially heard rumors that Bob Parsons, Gram’s stepfather, had orchestrated plans to bury the music icon in Louisiana. The motive, it was speculated, was rooted in the hope of Bob inheriting Gram’s considerable fortune through Louisiana’s unique Napoleonic Code, a legal system distinguishing itself from the common law system used in most of the United States.

Responding to this alleged change of burial plans, Kaufman took matters into his own hands, embarking on a daring mission to alter the course of Gram Parsons’ final journey. With determination bordering on audacity, Kaufman raced to Los Angeles International Airport in a hearse, where he skillfully convinced airline employees that the Parsons family had indeed changed their burial intentions.
