Born in Rostock, former East Germany, in 1973, Ullrich’s early exposure to the sport was ignited by familial inspiration, particularly his older brother, Stefan.

However, the Ullrich family faced challenges as Jan’s father left when he was just six years old. Despite this adversity, Jan found a guiding force in his older brother, who became the catalyst for his entry into the world of cycling.

At the age of 13, Ullrich’s talent was already evident, leading him to join the Kinder und Jugendsportschulen, the children’s sports school in East Berlin.

It was in this nurturing environment that Ullrich received crucial support that would shape his destiny as a cycling sensation. The sports school provided him with a quality bike.

The provision of this road bike was a pivotal moment, marking the beginning of Ullrich’s journey towards becoming a cycling superstar. Reflecting on those formative years, Ullrich acknowledges the significance of the support he received.

“The support we received as athletes was very good,” he shares. “My mother wouldn’t have been able to afford a road bike for me because it was ridiculously expensive, so having one was something very special.”
