ChatGPT maker OpenAI ousts CEO Sam Altman: Why was Sam Altman fired?

On November 17, 2023, the board of OpenAI announced that they had lost confidence in Sam Altman, the co-founder, and CEO of OpenAI, and that he had been fired from his position. The reasons behind his firing have not been made public yet.

Sam Altman is an American entrepreneur and investor who has served as the president of Y Combinator from 2011 to 2019 and the CEO of OpenAI from 2020 to 2023. He is known for his contributions to the development of ChatGPT, a viral chatbot.

“Mr. Altman’s departure follows a deliberative review process by the board, which concluded that he was not consistently candid in his communications with the board, hindering its ability to exercise its responsibilities,” the company said. “The board no longer has confidence in his ability to continue leading OpenAI.”

Altman co-founded Loopt, a location-based social networking mobile application, in 2005. He also served as the CEO of Reddit for eight days in 2014 after CEO Yishan Wong resigned. Altman became a partner at Y Combinator in 2011 and was named president of Y Combinator by its co-founder, Paul Graham, in February 2014.
