Subrata Roy was a visionary Indian entrepreneur, and the founder of Sahara India Pariwar in 1978.

Under Roy’s leadership, Sahara India Pariwar operated an extensive portfolio of businesses, including Aamby Valley City, Sahara Movie Studios, Air Sahara, Uttar Pradesh Wizards, and Filmy, among others.

In 2012, India Today recognized Subrata Roy as the tenth-most influential Indian businessman, highlighting his significant impact on the country’s economic landscape.

Time magazine, in 2004, went further to label the Sahara group as “the second-largest employer in India after Indian Railways,” underscoring the vast workforce associated with Roy’s ventures.

Sahara’s global footprint became apparent with landmark acquisitions, including the purchase of London’s iconic Grosvenor House Hotel in 2010 and the historic Plaza Hotel and Dream Downtown Hotel in New York City in 2012.

The Sahara Group, under Roy’s guidance, boasted a workforce of approximately 1.2 million individuals, encompassing salaried employees, consultants, field workers, agents, and business associates.

Operating through over 5,000 establishments across India, the Sahara conglomerate became a significant player in the nation’s economic landscape.
