Who Was Subrata Roy?

Subrata Roy was the visionary founder of Sahara India Pariwar.

Roy’s journey as an Indian businessman began in 1978 when he laid the foundation for Sahara India Pariwar.

Under Roy’s leadership, Sahara India Pariwar emerged as a conglomerate operating a myriad of businesses. From the opulent Aamby Valley City to the dynamic Sahara Movie Studios, Air Sahara, Uttar Pradesh Wizards, and Filmy, the Sahara umbrella extended far and wide.

In 2012, Roy earned recognition as the tenth-most influential Indian businessman according to India Today.

Notably, Time magazine dubbed the Sahara group as “the second largest employer in India after Indian Railways” in 2004, underscoring the vast employment footprint of Roy’s ventures.

Sahara’s global footprint expanded with the acquisition of iconic properties. In 2010, the group purchased London’s prestigious Grosvenor House Hotel, followed by the historic Plaza Hotel and Dream Downtown Hotel in New York City in 2012.

The Sahara group, a colossal entity, boasted a workforce of approximately 1.2 million, comprising salaried employees, consultants, field workers, agents, and business associates.

Operating through more than 5,000 establishments across India, Sahara played a pivotal role in shaping the nation’s business landscape.

In 2019, he announced Sahara’s entry into the automobile sector under the brand name ‘Sahara Evols,’ showcasing a commitment to diversification and innovation.
