Embarking on this ambitious journey through Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and likely Arkansas, de Soto became the initial European documented crossing the mighty Mississippi River.
Despite the Spanish perception of the expedition as a failure due to the absence of gold and prosperity, its consequences were profound.
De Soto’s exploration contributed to the Columbian Exchange, introducing elements like swine that eventually evolved into feral razorback pigs in the southeastern United States.
His death on May 21, 1542, on the banks of the Mississippi River marked the conclusion of a life dedicated to exploration and shaping the historical tapestry of the Americas.
