She gained national attention during the 2018 midterm elections when she defeated Republican incumbent Dave Brat, flipping the historically Republican-leaning 7th district.
As a congresswoman, Spanberger has been involved in various legislative matters, with a focus on issues such as healthcare, national security, and veteran affairs.
Her background in national security and her centrist approach have contributed to her prominence in the Democratic caucus.
In November 2023, Spanberger announced that she would be retiring from the House, to run for the governorship of Virginia.
