At the age of five, the Jara family relocated to Lonquén, a town near Santiago de Chile. Here, Manuel Jara, Victor’s father, rented a small parcel of land to continue their agricultural pursuits. However, a significant decision by his father marked Victor’s early life – a decision that would shape his views on education and labor.

Educational Struggles and Mother’s Influence

Manuel Jara, illiterate and preferring his children to work in the fields, opposed formal education. In contrast, Victor’s mother, Amanda Martínez, a mestiza with Araucanian ancestry, recognized the importance of learning. Despite her husband’s wishes, she insisted that her children at least learn the alphabet. Amanda, a skilled musician and singer, introduced Victor to the world of folk music.

Family Dynamics and Challenges

As Victor’s parents faced growing tension in their relationship, his father’s struggles with alcoholism intensified. Amanda, in response, took on more responsibilities, even moving to Santiago to work as a cook to support her family. Her determination allowed her to educate three of her children, including Victor, showcasing the resilience that would later define the Jara family.

Tragedy Strikes

The untimely death of Amanda Martínez when Victor was just 15 marked a turning point in his life. Despite the challenges, Victor persevered, initially pursuing studies in accounting. However, his path shifted when he entered a seminary, contemplating a future in the priesthood. Disillusionment with the Catholic Church led him away, and he spent time in the Chilean Army before returning to his roots.

Return to Roots

Back in his hometown, Victor Jara rediscovered his passion for folk music and theater. The cultural richness and musical heritage passed down by his mother fueled his artistic pursuits. His journey in the Chilean Army and his return to Lonquén marked a crucial period of self-discovery, laying the groundwork for the influential figure he would become.
